Kanack Couture startet off as a carpet made of 50.000 iron-on beads that the artists used to play with as a child. Sorted by hand and arranged into tiles. Each tile consists of 6728 iron-on beads. The carpet leads to a title, Kanak Couture. Followed by the subtitle: The feeling of never being good enough.
Kanak Couture is a reoccurring topic that the artist comes back to from time to time. It turned into an exhibition 2022 and recently into a living room installation, all in collaboration with fellow artist and friend Soukaina El-Adak.
The essence of it: Linda and Soukaina are both considered Kanaken in Germany. ,,Ein Kanake'' is a derogatory notion concerning people from Southeast Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. With Kanak Couture they want to give you an insight into their lives as Kanaken in Germany, growing up as an immigrant. Being influenced by their culture. A glimpse of their past. A part of themselves. Reclaiming the world and being proud of their heritage.
Kanak Couture can and will have many shapes and forms, it's about embracing your vulnerability and sensitivity after growing up in a household that required you to be strong, to be resilient.
It's about setting boundaries, being gentle with yourself, not caring about cultural expectations, accepting yourself and the pain and the beauty that comes with being away from home in a country that's (in a way) home.
